Practical scope and preparation guidance

Sanctions

Consult the relevant official jurisdictional lists and guidance. Match identity using reliable identifiers, record the source and date, and obtain appropriate advice on applicable restrictions. A similar name is not a conclusive match.

Regulatory warnings

Check the applicable regulator’s warning list and register independently. A warning has a defined regulatory scope; absence does not establish approval or a universal clean record.

Fraud and scam patterns

Pressure to pay before evidence, secrecy, implausible promises and changing instructions warrant further investigation. These patterns are review indicators rather than proof against a named party.

Fraudulent Proof of Funds

Check issuer details through independently obtained channels and reconcile the principal, amount and transaction. A document’s appearance or a claimed financial instrument is insufficient to confirm availability.

Broker red flags

Review undisclosed genealogy, inconsistent authority and fee claims without an identified payer. Ask for supporting records and agree payment conditions before accepting an allocation.

Company verification

Check the relevant official company register, current identity and authorised representatives. Registration alone does not prove solvency, product ownership or transaction capacity.

Impersonation

Independently obtain official contact details and compare names, domains and registration information. A genuine firm’s identity can be copied; contact through a forwarded message is not independent confirmation.

Advance-fee risks

Investigate requests for payment to release funds or recover losses, particularly where roles and evidence are unclear. The SEC describes advance-fee fraud as payment demanded before the promised proceeds are received.
